Thank you Bijaya for your posts. They are informational and to the point.
What are your thoughts on mite control? Ive had 6-8 hens for 3 years with little issues until possibly this spring due to wet/damp spring.
I always out a few teaspoons of vinegar into their water and apply either lime dust or DE around their nesting & dusting areas.
Recently, Two have had messy vent issues & minor loss of feathers but enough to notice issue. No indication of worms in fecal float test done by vet. Both act normal except one doesn’t perch at night and stays in nesting box.
Your advice is very welcome!
Thank you, Sue
Hi, Sue, Hope you and your flocks are well.
Mites are not a good thing for your chickens. They sucks blood and cause other type of health issues, like blood infection and skin issues.
They may cause other issues like feather loss and vent infections. DE is a slow acting natural substance and mites, lice and fleas are rapid growing parasites. So, if you see these types of parasites your first step is to an chicken wormer – Here is the guide for that – (Click Here)
In few countries where these chicken wormers are not available peoples use – Gamaxene insectisides (Gama Benzene Hexachloride) like talc powder on chickens feather, which kills all the outer body parasites.
Another issue- One is not sleeping at perch. You will amaze that my 50 percent of chickens do not like to perch at night they sleep inside nesting box. But if its looks odd to you then check her body for fever.
Thanks for writing.
